Abhoth: no tengo expectativas específicas.

Y tal vez debería decir gracias a Roger Waters y compañía y saludar a Richard Wagner.

Y ciertamente iremos a visitaros algún día.

  • – Contadnos proyectos a corto y mediano plazo.

English Version
  • – In Spain you are not yet a well-known group, so the first thing is that you introduce yourself. Who are you currently forming this Monumentum?

Abhoth: Indeed, as Monumentum Damnati we have existed only since 2018. At this stage we prefer not to disclose the identities of the participants. Only one thing is important that we have gathered in order to create interesting things in a form which we would never use in our other projects.

Thanatos: At this moment the only thing we could tell you about us is that Abhoth and I currently living in Eastern Europe. We have a few side musical projects so do other participants. MD was born not so long ago and we have a lot further plans.

  • – “In The Tomb Of A Forgotten King” is your new work, can you tell us how has been the composition of your album?

Abhoth: This album turned out to be very personal. At first it was hard to imagine that it would leave the confines of a secluded room. Inspiration was drawn for many years, the material gathered. Some songs were written after strong psychological upheaval in a period of detachment. Some are written a little more consciously. In any case in order to implement the plan it took a long time and to step back from the original concept. It was necessary for me to take a break, soberly assess what is happening in life and look back to give time to my demons to rest. Today we’re getting pretty warm reviews from journalists on the finished product and I think that was a right decision. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. A huge amount of gathered material is still waiting in the wings.

Thanatos: The most part of the material for this album was written a while ago under different circumstances during about 10 years but there was no chance to use it in other side projects. Well, It just so happens that when Abhoth and I met it turned out we have a common passion to create extravagant mix of extreme metal genres with strong doom gloomy influence. Everything happened so fast we quickly came up with the idea to create a new common project and the main concept of MD. It all worked out so easy for us, songs and ideas that were covered in dust for such a long time finally took a solid shape. We also invited for the recording session some of our friends who wish to remain anonymous as well.

  • – What are the lyrics on this album about?

Abhoth: Each song has several interpretations at once. Mostly for the purpose of not becoming attached to specifics. Passion for literature, films on the one hand, and immersion in philosophy resulted in 2 instrumental tracks and 7 compositions with lyrics on this album. The Great Old Ones coexist with insane killers here. The human edges of madness intersect with mythological and occult allusions. The songs converge in the one concept of a crazy gloomy masquerade despite different times of its appearance.

Thanatos: Well, let’s say the lyrics and message of the album is pretty much straight and clear. I suppose interested listener will not have any troubles of comprehending the ideas. The most beautiful and good thing is that everyone could find something personal in here something that relates to their thoughts and live experience. Lyrics are not just straightforward, you know.

  • – What is the work methodology of the group, first you write the lyrics, then the music, or not tennis an established order?

Abhoth: In fact everything is individual in each case. The main thing is to follow to some strategy from the very beginning. The lyrics for “Infernal Sun” for example were written a long time ago for the other song. But later it was postponed until better moment. And when it again caught my eye I’ve pictured the images of the finished composition in my thoughts. The general backbone, melody and basic arrangements were written almost immediately. But this is rather the exception. I usually start composing a song with musical part. And I keep in mind an approximate concept of the future track, individual random phrases.

Thanatos: There is no stable recipe it always the matter of moment. Sometimes an interesting riff or harmony sparkles in your mind and you rushing to save it somehow like mumble a melody to the recorder or something and later trying out to do a decent piece of work from it. Occasionally music could summon some emotions which will inspire to write a lyrics and it’s now always supposed to be your music. It also works the same with movies and literature, even random episodes from life or history could bring some ideas.

  • – You look is impressive, does it have any meaning, why is it?

Abhoth: I am a big addict of visual performances. And I’m in love with projects that can find some time, imagination (or ok, money and the right people) in order to make a beautiful thematic show. I think music is paramount but it would be criminal to ignore the importance of the thematic visuals. It is enhance the effect of immersion in the atmosphere together with music. Our masks and images will not stop evolving from the current version. I create it myself in my studio. It was made based on the images that appear to me in nightmares or in times of mental breakdown as a basis…

Thanatos: Or after reading of Lovecraft

Abhoth: …or after reading certain literature yes including the great Howard Phillips, nowhere without him.

Thanatos: It may sound peculiar but this outfit in some way helps us to disengage from outer world and to be ourselves. We let our music come through our souls, living it. These masks reflect our inner demons.

  • – The album will be released on March 30, what reaction do you expect from your fans and those who are not before this release?

Abhoth: I don’t have any specific expectations. As I wrote earlier, many (all at this moment) reviewers warmly accepted the album, it’s pleasant I must admit. Of course it’s impossible to please everyone but this is was never our goal for sure.

Thanatos: We don’t have any high expectations on this matter. We never even thought to create a mainstream product. It’s an honest work everything we did we really like and we believe there is plenty of people who may like it as well.

  • – There are many people who think, at least in Spain, that Doom Metal no longer the reputation it had before and that it is a half-dead style, what do you think of these comments?

Abhoth: This is partly true. This is not the most popular subgenre in metal and has never been the most popular. But for me personally this is not a drawback. But, as Nietzsche said: “aber wo das Gesindel mit trinkt, da sind alle Brunnen vergiftet”. And that is why it is so pleasant to find real pearls in this underground stream among young bands. Believe me, they are numerous. I equally love both the old and the new school and I think that every band equally has the right to its place under the sun.

Thanatos: To be honest I would not label MD as a Doom Metal band despite its strong influence in our music. Speaking of what happens with the genre nowadays it is the same problem as in other orthodox music genres which is stagnation and ripping off the old ideas. Only avant-garde projects still have that spice they not afraid to push the limits and keep creating insane and super interesting things. Especially nowadays. Today many musicians from all the genres likes to add some electro or sympho influences because technology allows to use it very easily. You just need to have a computer and a bit of talent. Speaking specifically of doom metal, nowadays young bands have a lot to offer but they don’t create anything new and it’s hard to hear any difference between them. For instance back in 90s things were completely different. Musicians was not afraid of experiments the whole new subgenres were invented, some albums was so afar of its time. That’s the thing that young generation is missing out.

  • – To which groups do we owe MD to do what it does?

Abhoth: If we talk about the sources of inspiration I have too many. From the early childhood I grew up surrounded by metal / rock environment. The huge collection of hard / prog / art rock vinyl from the older generation and the huge discography of thrash and death metal formed definite looks. Also an extensive collection of horror movies has influenced on my future tastes. These tastes were repeatedly changed and supplemented in the future. Jazz, classical music, neoclassicism and doom metal (of course) came to my life later. But it’s hard for me to show my top favorite bands honestly. And maybe I should say thanks to Roger Waters with the company and pay salute to Richard Wagner.

Thanatos: You probably will be surprised but participants are play and listen to a very different music, it could be a synth pop or brutal death metal. MD for us is a relief. Here we can realize all our craziest and darkest ideas which we would never use in side projects. Personally I find inspiration by a very different music but mostly by unusual death metal bands.

  • – How do you have the theme of concerts for the presentation of this new work? Can we see you in the short term in our country?

Abhoth: We love your country you have a great climate and nature, friendly people and a distinctive local scene. And we would certainly come to visit you someday. From time to time some offers come to us from different parts of the world. The presentation will take place but most likely with a delay. Time management is not our strongest point (remember 10 years, right?).

Thanatos: We are working in that direction. Currently we are on a stage of creating of live performance concept but it will be something unusual not like a typical metal concert. This is requires of certain resources and time so for now it’s hard to promise something concrete.

  • – What are we going to find in a live Monumentum?

Abhoth: I can definitely say that we are preparing a full-fledged show. It’s not interesting for us to just go on stage, play the gig with poker faces and rush off behind the leaving tour bus. We are ready to give the listener a wild energy and are confident that we will receive energy back. Perhaps we will also play live material not only from the debut release but also from the second which we are currently working on.

Thanatos: It’s gonna be some kind of a dark ritual performance. You know it is pretty hard to realize all our thoughts especially with limited resources. But we definitely will do our best, we will do everything possible to make listener capture this event in memory.

  • – Tell us short and medium term projects.

Abhoth: From immediate plans … I would like to solve many organizational issues that lie like a dead weight. And closer to the summer-autumn we have plans to travel to our favorite cities with concerts. In the longer term we plan to continue studio work and continue to shoot videos.

Thanatos: Right now we are fully focused on MD and temporarily stopped all other activities. We still have a lot to say so there is a lot of work to be done.
